This has been my favorite pea and ham soup recipe for a couple years but I’m sadly on a calorie based diet right now and need to figure out how much I can eat for the serving size and calories listed.5 stars

I’ve been making pea and ham soup (Australian name) for years but I’ve only recently bought a pressure cooker, a CrockPot express. I use much the same ingredients but as I want a fat-free soup, I cook the ham hock seperately to make stock, using basic stock ingredients ie onion, carrot, celery & bayleaf, then pressure cook for 30 minutes. Then
strain, peel off skin & fat and remove all bones leaving lovely flavourful meat & stock.
I leave stock in fridge overnight to allow the fat to rise and settle on top … this will still be soft but relatively easy to gently remove without stirring back into stock! I then start from scratch with the remaing soup ingredients, adding meat from hock to heat through at the end.
Been cooking this for years, and lots of other soups, mainly from leftover roast bones, even leaving chicken stuffing in (I’m known as the soup lady to family & friends!) and always make stock first as the flavours develop much better if left overnight.
Thanks again for sharing your recipe, I’ve got a hock cooking as we speak. Next week will be creamy pumpkin.5 stars

I also used a cubed up ham steak instead. It was really good, better than I expected. Reminded me of my grandma’s recipe.

I halved the recipe since there are only two of us, and my partner was hesitant about it (he begrudgingly said it was good), and there is still plenty of leftovers. I kept the cooking time the same, and it was still perfect.5 stars

In place of the bone/hock, I used smoked, grass fed bacon, cut up the entire package into 1″ slices, sauteed in the bottom of the pot, then drained the grease and proceeded with the recipe. It was too much bacon …… but is that really a thing? 🙂 Left it cooking on HIGH an extra 15 minutes to make sure the bacon was cooked through. DEEEEE-LISH. (Not sure what brand Instant Pot I have) Thanks so much!5 stars

Boneless leg of lamb leftovers. Just used in place of ham in recipe as we needed to use up the leftovers.

Even DH had seconds. I did cook it a bit differently by first pressure cooking the pork hocks for 45 minutes in the chicken broth. I did a 10 minute natural release and set the hocks aside to cool. Then I finished the recipe cooking the soup without the meat. I did end up needing to give the soup another 5 minutes probably because my split peas were old. It was absolutely delicious.5 stars
